The tale of a woman who has been cheating on her husband but opts to take her own life rather than admit her wrongdoing, it could feel like a misery dirge — or distastefully lurid — in the hands of a lesser outfit. For Three Cheers-era MCR , however, it was the perfect showcase of their dark Tim Burton-esque talents, building on a propulsive drumbeat with dark romance and a poignant sense of tragedy. Oh, and did we mention that Hollywood legend Liza Minnelli crops up to chuck on her uber-distinctive vocals and cry all over the end?

Named after an Irvine Welsh novel and formed in September by singer Gerard Way after he witnessed the attack on the World Trade Centre, My Chemical Romance came to define alternative rock in the s. Their first album, rough, unpolished and darkly gothic, was produced by the Thursday singer Geoff Rickly and introduced them as intense, artistic and vampiric. But third album, The Black Parade , was their masterpiece — a theatrical concept record that was by turns furiously intense and archly camp. Touring the wildly successful album was a draining experience and they attempted to redefine themselves following it and struggled. Shot through with gothic imagery, spooky mansions, romance and death, the lyrics are classic Gerard. Listen to the building intro as it moves into the pre-chorus, drums rattling along at all kinds of a lick. Not one of their more generally celebrated songs, but it should be. My Chemical Romance scrapped an entire album before making their fourth and final record, Danger Days , and were at something of a creative dead end. He headed out to the desert with his wife and young daughter to brood on matters, and out of nowhere came the thrilling, visceral and utterly joyful Na Na Na. Simple, searing and sizzling, he preaches about capitalism and fame while the song itself gave him and the band the impetus to put the rest of the record together.
They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major-label debut, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge , in Shortly after the album's release, Pelissier was replaced by Bob Bryar. After the departure of long-time drummer Bob Bryar in March , the band released their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys , in November that same year, to positive reviews. After the addition of touring keyboardist James Dewees in and the release of Conventional Weapons , a series of singles recorded in , released over the course of five months, the band announced its breakup on March 22, , one month after the final release in the Conventional Weapons series.
